Let the bidding begin. That's the message the state government is hoping to send to anyone interested in buying a new car. Matt Hunter has more on New York's new venture into online car sales.
ALBANY, N.Y. -– "You can get almost anything," New York State Office of General Services Commissioner RoAnn Destito enthusiastically said Thursday morning.
For the next two weeks, the Harriman State Office Campus in Albany will play host to one of the area's largest, if not the largest, used car lots in the Capital Region, where everything will be auctioned off online starting Tuesday, April 3.
"This initiative is to allow a global population of people to bid on assets that the state is actually eliminating from its fleet,” Destito said.
While the state has been auctioning off old and repossessed vehicles for some time, this is the first time they've used the internet.
Interested buyers will have 10 days to log onto the state's website, which links to eBay, and bid on any number of the 450 vehicles up for sale for a minimum price of $500.
"They certainly have been high mileage vehicles that we have maintained. As I've walked and inspected some of them, you can see that they have good tread on the vehicles," Destito said.
With 450 vehicles on the lot, you're bound to get some variety. Many of the vehicles are newer models with just a couple of years on them, including numerous hybrid models, but the oldest car up for sale is a 1968 Ford 250 pickup truck with less than 40,000 miles on it.
"It's as is, [everything is] sold as is," Destito said.
All of the vehicles were owned and used by various state agencies.
The auction, which will benefit the state's general fund, is part of Governor Cuomo's plan to reduce the state's fleet and lower operational and maintenance costs.
"I believe it's a cost saver, it will be a revenue producer. I mean, we always benefit from our auctions, this is just a different approach we're taking on eBay," Destito said.
Anyone who purchases a vehicle will have to pick it up themselves at the Harriman State Office Campus in Albany.
Four inspection dates, in which the public is invited to view the entire lot, have been scheduled.
