The American Red Cross of Central New York is honoring ordinary citizens for doing extraordinary things at their annual Real Heroes Breakfast. Once again this year, YNN is proud to share some of those stories with you. This is the story of the 2012 Military Real Hero.

Heroes serve. The sacrifices can run deep, and when that service takes a turn for the worse, families are affected. A single phone call can change everything.

Army Specialist First Class Kyle Casler had stepped on a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. Back home in Union Springs, his family is notified.

Within three days, Kyle is transported back to the states to Walter Reed Hospital.

“We pretty much threw everything in the car and went to Walter Reed. (But to) I myself was there for a month, my wife was there for three months,” said his father.

Kyle’s sacrifice was his left leg, amputated below the knee. But this hero will not let the injury slow him down, despite facing a long period of rehabilitation.

“I’ll be able to walk again, I’ll be able to get back on my feet and go around and do everything I used to do,” said Kyle.

“The grass isn’t going to grow under his feet, he is moving forward, his determination and positive attitude are his best friend,” his mother said.

“Kyle is moving forward, he is a very brave, resilient young man,” added his father.

For his service, and his sacrifice, Kyle Casler is the 2012 Military Real Hero.
