WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Some local representatives were sworn in Thursday. They include democrats Dan Maffei for the 24th District, Bill Owens of the 21st District and republicans Tom Reed in the 23rd District and Richard Hanna in the 22nd District.

Owens has been in office since 2009, originally elected to the old 23rd District. He secured two more years after defeating Republican Matt Doheny in November.

Reed, elected to Congress in 2010, represented the former 29th District. He held onto his seat by beating out democrat Nate Shinagawa.

Hanna was elected to Congress in 2010 to represent the former 24th District. He beat out democrat Dan Lamb this past election.

And Maffei first served in 2008, representing the former 25th District. He beat out Republican incumbent Ann Marie Buerkle to head back to Washington this year.

Maffei said this time around will be a challenge.

"Having been in office before, people knew that I worked hard. Now, I also want to make sure that they know that I've learned from my experience and I'm going to start to work smarter too," Maffei said.

The 21st congressional district includes 12 counties in the North Country. The 23rd covers 11 counties, the 24th covers four counties and the 22nd covers seven counties.
