FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- A deployment ceremony was held Friday on Fort Drum for about 3,000 10th Mountain Division soldiers. Close to half the 1st Brigade Combat Team and a little less than half of the 2nd Brigade Combat team are headed back to Afghanistan, as the U.S. government prepares for a troop pullout in 2014.

The men and women will not be used in combat operations. Instead, they will serve as advisors to Afghan National Security Forces. The 10th Mountain units will provide their own security and support needs while deployed.

The mission will last about nine months but will not be the last for 10th Mountain Division soldiers

“The 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum will be involved in this final drawdown phase over the next 23 months. All of our brigades and our division headquarters is scheduled to go there and participate so they’ll be some of the last American units in Afghanistan through 2014, until we get to whatever the Enduring Presence looks like, whatever that is,” said MG Stephen Townsend, 10th Mt Div Commander.

Fort Drum troops not deployed will still be assisting with the mission from afar and continue training for their possible rotation into Afghanistan before December of 2014. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
