A Tuesday afternoon crash in Canton claimed the life of a long-time North Country fireman and his father. Barry Wygel shows us how his department is remembering and honoring their longtime brother.

ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- The firefighters of the Morley Fire Department had to face their worst fears Tuesday as they were called to an accident on Morley-Potsdam Road that involved one of their own.

"You pull up on scene and you just see a car and a truck and then you're walking up to the car and you realize that it's one of your own members that they are doing CPR on, that's kind of hard on you," said Mike Perkins, Morley Fire Chief.

Thomas Butterfield was traveling with his father, Theron, when they hit a slippery part of the road and were struck by an oncoming car. Both men were killed in the crash. Thomas' fellow firefighters remember him as someone who would go above and beyond the call of duty.

"If you asked him to direct traffic, he would direct traffic. He'd always come back to the station after a call and ask if there is anything specific to do and no matter what it was took on the task," said Joe Brooks, 1st Asst. Chief.

In the wake of the accident, the firefighters here have come together and they are working with Butterfield's family to put together a fitting tribute.

"We're waiting right now for the final arrangements with the family, as far as what we are going to do, we'll probably provide fire apparatus for the funeral," said Brooks.

Brooks wants Butterfield to be remembered as someone who loved life.

"Enjoyed the community, enjoyed the people he hung around with, just taken the consideration that he liked what he did," said Brooks.

Butterfield spent more than 20 years helping his communities as a firefighter. Before joining the Morley Fire Department, Butterfield also served in the West Potsdam and Parishville Fire Departments.
