ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and New York State are close to finalizing a land deal.

Leaders from the tribe signed a Memorandum of Understanding with state and county officials on Wednesday. According to the memorandum, the final settlement would permit the tribe to acquire identified land in St. Lawrence County only from willing sellers.

It also state the tribe would receive $2 million per year from the New York Power Authority for the next 35 years, and limited electricity at the lowest possible rate. Lastly, tribe members who qualify for admission would receive free SUNY tuition.

In exchange, the state will pay local governments for any lost property taxes. The county will also receive one-time payments of $2 million from the state and $1.5 million from the tribe, in addition to $4 million per year from New York State.

The tribe is also looking to acquire land from Franklin County. The final settlement needs local, state, and Congressional approval. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
